Definition of appetizer
: a food or drink that stimulates the appetite and is usually served before a meal

Tapas  (pronounced TAH Pas) is a  style of dining.found in Spanish restaurants and bars.
Tapas consist of select food offerings and appetizer dishes commonly served with alcohol beverages and cocktails (like appertif"s.)
The type of food offerings can be marinated veggies, small slabs of meat like ham and cheeses.
The dishes range from a small omelette to stuffed peppers.  Tiny finger sandwiches with charcuterie fillings and miniature versions of dishes are featured.

What is the difference between side and appetizer?
Appetizer - For a starter to stimulate the appetite, and it is served at the beginning of the meal.  And , keep the servings small. 2.
Side - Served with main the course of the meal either on dinner or salad plate.

APPETIZER FIRST COURSE

An appetizer can be served before a meal to charge and whet the diner's appetite.  Appetizer is the label used to describe small dishes and/or small portions food offerings.  Every ethnic culture seems to have appetizers on their restaurant menus.


American appetizers are found in every type and  form of commercial food service operations.
American style Appetizer dishes and food offerings are found on menus in Bars, Brewery Houses, Pizzerias and Diner's.  Food offerings like chicken wings, battered and fried cheese and chicken nuggets, artichoke dip with breads and or chips.

Appetizer Specific Forms & Styles

In the Culinary/Hospitality professional world appetizers come in specific forms.
The forms are classified as the following:
appetizers: canapes, chips and dip, cocktails, finger foods, fruits and vegetables, hors d'oeuvres, petite (small salads), relishes and crudite, & other.


Hors d'oeuvres French origin word pronounced or-DERV
The translates to English as dishes and the term is plural and singular.  Hors d'oeuvres are small portions of savory foods one to two bites in size.  Hors d'oeuvres can be served hot or cold.  Commonly served with a Cocktail or Aperitifs.
Examples
Dip with chips/breads
Salsa served with corn and flour tortilla chips is an appetizer offering found in Mexican restaurants.
Found in Fine Dining restaurant, gastropubs to ethnic diners and eateries.
Breads served with dips.  Flat breads served with dips.
Bars and Pubs commonly offer loaves of bread with vegetable dips.
Chips and dip: Serving tortilla chips and salsa at a party is an example of chips and dip appetizers.


Canapes  KAN - uh-pay
Canape is a french word translates to English as couch

A Canape is usually a thin slice of bread that is cut into shapes, and topped with a savory topping. It is small enough to eat in one bite.  Italian appetizer Bruschetta is an example of a Canape.
Often served with a cocktail .
The term Cocktails refers to a specific type of beverage.  As well as a form of an appetizer.
Appetizer Cocktails made from seafood (crab, shrimp, scallops) is a long time popular appetizer dish in Reno and Nevada buffets and eateries.  As well as Fruit Cocktails found at the same restaurants.


Finger Foods
Bite size food items and or tiny complete dishes made in form that can be eaten with ones fingers.
Battered and fried vegetables are an example of finger foods.
Ethnic dishes like Dim Sum (little treasures) are small one to two bites size dish.  Meat and vegetables filled dumplings are popular offerings at Chinese restaurants.


Fruits & Vegetables
Fruits & Vegetables served with appropriate dips and sauces.  Most common form is a platter of fruits and or vegetables to feed the table.

Relish appetizer
An appetizer is intended to stimulate a diner"s appetite.  It is not served as a traditional appetizer course before the meal.  An appetizer Relish is consumed with the main meal and or side dish.
A Relish is a fruit or vegetable mixture that is strong flavored (sweet, sour, sweet and sour, spicy) and is eaten with fruit or vegetables that are plain and bland.  The Relish enhances the flavor of the food dishes it is consumed with.

Examples of Relishes include pickled vegetables and sweet or savory Relishes. A Relish tray typically includes several types of pickled vegetables and Relishes that complement those vegetables.
There are three key ingredients in Relish: produce (fruits, vegetables or a mixture), vinegar, & sugar. Additional ingredients are often added, including spices like mustard seed to make old-fashioned mustard pickle relish or mayonnaise to make crisp onion Relish.

There are three ways in Reno to acquire restaurant level appetizers.

  • Foods Delivery Service from Commercial food service operations.  One can have completed professional made dishes and food offerings dropped to your doorstep.  All at a reasonable cost.  One does not have to deal with transportation cost and time.  Big benefit, you can order from a huge selection and variety of menus.
  • Take Away. In -person acquisitions of desired foods and dishes from one or more food service operations.  Among the benefits of take away, one can confirm they got what they ordered.  As well as proper packaging and actual items received can be confirmed.  Placing an order online or by phone call allows one to make special requests.
  • Self Made  Acquiring all the foods and performing the necessary tasks to produce restaurant level food items and dishes.  The key to producing restaurant level foods and dishes In - home is the recipe used.  A proper effective recipe should yield a dish that is professional quality.
